Additional Testimonial Details:
"I stayed in my house, because of school, while my parents stayed at the Sheraton Hotel. I spent a considerable amount of money on gas, I went to school, drove to Waikiki to bathe, and drove back home. We could not park all of our cars at the hotel parking, so my parents (who both work) had to drive back home as well to get the other car for my mom to drive. It was very inconsistent and frustrating, I could not make food, clean dishes, or brush my teeth without worrying about the water. The lack of clarity and care from the military makes it difficult to trust that the water is or will remain safe. Due to prices of housing in Hawaii, and the fact that we will not be living here for a long time, it is irrational to buy a house and move. We have to stay in military housing. Among other maintenance issues, such a ACs constantly breaking and grass not being maintained, we are essentially forced to deal with the apathetic and amoral management of military housing. I have little faith any of these issues will be resolved because the military has established a character which does the bare minimum to take care of its housing."
"People in my area were offered free hotel rooms in a different water region for showering purposes if they could tell they were physically impacted (smell, film on top of water etc.) However, many people took advantage of this and got a hotel room even though they didn’t experience physical signs. For a while, water was being delivered to our door by military members, but then they stopped and it was up to household members to pick up clean water at certain pick up locations."
"It was a struggle and tiring having to drive from downtown area to school and back with traffic in the afternoon. After awhile the military didn’t provide for us. It was a struggle for my family because they had work to go to. In the first week they did provide kids with buses to the school but not going back to the hotel in the afternoon."
"Our family couldnt move, we stayed at home for a while, where we had to bathe with water bottles. Later, we were displaced from home and lived in a hotel for months at a time. It was very inconvenient and hard to get everything done. There was a lot of ignorance during the event. People thought we were lucky to be living in a hotel. Or claimed it was mass hysteria. There should have been more press on the issue. Those who dont live in Hawaii likely dont know what occured. Likely, something like this will happen again."
"Besides the water itself it was very irritating because we had to leave everyday to get buckets and buckets of water just to cook and then every night had to leave after dinner to the hotel to shower and had to pay extra money to wash our laundry.
"There was a video shown through social media where people were able to light the water coming out of the faucet on fire."
"A lot of people I knew, including my family, had to temporarily get moved to a hotel while the water was having problems."
"It was really stressful when I learned about the leak. We were really limited with what we could do for a while. We couldn't cook, we couldn't shower as often, and we could only drink bottled water. They turned off all of the sprinklers around our neighborhoods as well because of the leak, which caused all of the grass to die. It had a big effect on the environment."
"It shouldn't have happened in the first place."
"My parents were trying to figure out XXX's disease, but while I was working on my chores, I heard some talking coming from the kitchen. I went to go inspect. They said that the water has been contaminated and all the stores ran out of water bottles to resolve the issue. Knowing how some people hoard things, we took 3 and left before the hoarders came. What's worse was that grandma and grandpa were coming soon, and they live fancier than us, so that's a problem. Eventually, they left, and we needed to go to the hotel. Since no one tolerated masks being off then, we couldn't get breakfast there. But once the mask requirement was lifted, we ate breakfast there almost everyday before school. Let me tell you, it was FILLING. Eventually, we were kicked out of the hotel due to the water being restored. We finished up our water bottles that we had remaining, because we couldn't really trust it. We soon returned to normal tap water, but to ensure it won't happen again, my mom bought a Kangen water machine. It converts water by adding in acidity, but I don't know too much about it. It sits there to this day, but no one really uses it anymore. While the water event was happening, the doctors (Tripler) said XXX had eczema. She didn't. A more trusted hospital we went to said she had JDM."
"I lived in AMR and we were given a hotel room to bathe in."
